There are five nuclear sites in Belgium. The best known are the nuclear power stations in Doel and Tihange (ENGIE Electrabel). There are also the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN), Belgonucléaire & Belgoprocess in Mol-Dessel and the National Institute for Radio Elements (IRE) in Fleurus. There are also two nuclear sites near our borders, in Borssele (Netherlands) and Chooz (France).
The risk of serious accidents at a nuclear site is small, but not non-existent. In case of a nuclear accident with a radioactive release, there is a risk for the environment and for people (internal or external radiation).
